This week we celebrated Road Safety Week with Neon Day, highlighting the "Be Bright Be Seen" message and sustainable travel. Children had fun designing reflective jackets, using traffic signs and practicing road safety. Even on darker days, remember to wrap up warm, wear bright clothes and walk to school to stay safe and visible!

The children in Badgers and Foxes had a lovely time on their welly walk to the park. They enjoyed walking in the crunchy leaves and watching the squirrels playing and climbing together. They then had some time to play in the playground before heading back to school.

Thank you to all the parents who came to the workshop to decorate the jars with their children. The children had a brilliant time and the jars look amazing! Don’t forget to book your tickets for Stockwood Illuminated, a winter light celebration set against the backdrop of the beautiful gardens at Stockwood Discovery Centre, which will be held from 13th December to 24th December.

Year One celebrated the start of their topic 'Who's scared of the dark' with a 'sleepover'. The children came to school in their cosy pyjamas and slippers and we spent time making friendship bracelets, sleep masks and dream catchers before snuggling up with some popcorn and a short film.

To mark the end of our topic, Year One wrote invitations to their loved ones and invited them in to school to take part in an afternoon tea. They used their spreading and chopping skills to make sandwiches and fruit kebabs and enjoyed decorating biscuits with their grown ups. They then spent precious time together playing games and reading stories. It was wonderful to see so many of their loved ones in school.

We hosted our first Grandparents Lunch this week for Year R children. Grandparents were able to experience the lunch time routine with their grandchild and then made a little rosette to take home. It was lovely to meet the all grandparents and see the children enjoy having them in school.

Last week reception went to ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. We had a great time! We saw the tigers sunbathing, Chimps playing and we even saw one of the elephants taking a shower. We made the most of our day and saw as many animals as we could. Some of us were so tired at the end, we couldn't keep our eyes open on the way home. What a zoo-tactic day!

The children had a fantastic time learning all about Australia during our Arts Week. Throughout the week, children had the opportunity to learn some interesting geographical and historical facts about Australia, take part in the Aboriginal dance workshop and eat Australian food. The children also learnt about Aboriginal art, made a boomerang, collaged the Sydney Opera House and made coral reef diorama. Thank you to all the parents for supporting the children by visiting our Art exhibition.

Buzz, buzz, buzz! Lots of buzzing was heard across the school as we ran a four-day event called 'Buzzing about Bees'. We kicked off a series of events with a bee dress up day. The children kindly made small donations to go towards helping us create bee friendly areas around our school grounds. In school, the children learnt about why it is important to look after bees and ways in which they can help. We were also lucky enough to have a Zoom session with Colin from the Bedfordshire Beekeepers Association.

Wow...what an eventful week! Our Carnival was buzzing with life and entertainment. This year’s theme was ‘Our World, Our Future’. Throughout the week children discussed what they could do to save the environment and all year groups participated by making their own bespoke costumes inspired by their book. They also learnt new songs and dances. How exciting! On the final day, children paraded their costume and performed their newly learnt song and dance. Well done to the overall winners: Pink Class!

The choir performed out in the community and sang lots of Christmas carols and songs to get everyone in the festive mood. Our first trip was to Betty Dodd in Luton singing to all the residents and staff. We then were delighted to perform at Chaul End Community Centre and even had a sing-along to The Twelve Days of Christmas including all the actions. The choir then visited St. Martin de Porres Church and finally Tesco Extra in Dunstable to entertain the shoppers. The children collected for the Bedfordshire Hospitals

On Saturday 13th May we held our Annual Lewsey Park Litter Pick. What a turnout! We had lots of children and their families gather at the park to do their part for the local community. The children received a litter picker and bin bag and wandered around Lewsey Park seeking out any litter they could find. The park is a much safer and cleaner place for us and the local wildlife thanks to your efforts. You are all fantastic Eco Warriors!

What an extraordinary day it was for our very own Miss Green! On Thursday, we celebrated Miss Green working at Ferrars for a huge 25 years, yes, 25 YEARS! She began her career as a Nursery Nurse, then began her teacher training, followed by becoming the Assistant Head, Deputy Head and now Principal since 2017. This achievement is very inspiring for many of us here at Ferrars. Children helped to decorate the school by making bunting, sketching and painting versions of her from throughout the years. We held a very special assembly where some very dear past and present staff came along to join in the fun. A special treat of cakes and lemonade were delivered to each class to join in the celebrations. Thank you, Miss Green, for everything you do for the children, staff and the community. We wish you a joyful and accomplishing continued career here at The Ferrars Academy!

Children from our after school Dance Club were entered into the School Games Dance Competition last week hosted at Luton's Sixth Form College. The children performed their dance routine confidently against other schools, going through to the next stage. The dancers completed all their routines and ended up winning the competition! The children skipped back into school excitedly showing off their well deserved medal.

Diversity day 2024 has been a huge success. How lovely it has been to find out a bit more about our school community and the different cultures and traditions associated with our children and parents. We would like to say an enormous thank you to the large number of parents who spent the afternoon in school sharing information from their diverse backgrounds and for making and sharing different traditional food. We have been on a journey around the world from the comfort of our classrooms. The children loved having you in school and we have all learnt lots about each other, helping to develop tolerance and understanding of each other.

They were able to dress up in some cultural clothing, learned a little about the cultures who celebrate Diwali as well as some new dance moves! Year 2 were lucky enough to take part in the Flat Stan workshop. They learnt how they could help someone in a medical emergency. They learnt vital lifesaving skills such CPR, hymnic manoeuvre and even how to help a friend if they’ve broken your arm. Remember if you ever need emergency assistance call: 999, 112, 111 or 101 and tell them your emergency and where you are.

Our children have been busy practising class and whole school songs ready for our Harvest Assembly. The children performed amazingly using loud, clear voices. It was lovely to see lots of parents/grandparents/carers attend the assembly. Thank you for your generous donations, we really do appreciate this, especially in these hard times that we are all currently experiencing. All donations have been spilt between Luton's Food Bank and Luton's Womens Aid. They were very grateful and will be distributed to families in need across Luton.

We celebrated harvest with some super assemblies this week. We are very proud of the children for putting on such fabulous performances in just a few short weeks of starting the school year. Thank you to the families and staff for their kind donations of food. What an amazing day we’ve just experienced! From sharing a story with Queen Sarah, playing traditional games such as Jacks, marbles, Tiddlywinks and dominoes; making sandwiches for our tea party and dancing and singing to our guests. The sun shone down on us as we remembered and celebrated our very special Queen Elizabeth II and her 70 year reign. Another uplifting Ferrars Academy experience which our children will remember for years to come.
